Project Discovery

WHAT IS PROJECT DISCOVERY?

Project Discovery addresses the problem of unequal access to higher education by low income and/or potential first generation students. Program activities include academic support, counseling, goal-oriented workshops and campus visits. Such activities help low income students set goals for their lives, increase self-esteem and become the first in their family to go to college. Approximately 165 youth are served each year with around 30 high school seniors graduating and going to college.

SCHOOL SYSTEMS WE SERVE

CAPUP has Project Discovery programs in the following school systems:  Chesterfield, Dinwiddie, Goochland, Henrico, Hopewell, Petersburg, Powhatan and Richmond City.

LEGISLATURE VOTES TO MAINTAIN PROJECT DISCOVERY FUNDING

The Virginia House of Delegates voted on May 14, 2012, by 81 to 9, to defeat Governor McDonnell’s deep cuts to Project Discovery funding.  The House restored $175,000 to the Virginia Department of Education grant.  While Project Discovery has still been significantly reduced (to $350,000 down from  $619,650 in 2011), the VDOE grant will allow Project Discovery to continue operations over the next biennium through the use of its own funds and donations from private sources.
