What’s New?!

  • Our board member, Ben Rogers, had a group of his students from Brightpoint Community College’s Black Student Alliance (BSA) join us in the food pantry. They were so much fun and we can’t wait for more opportunities to serve together!
  • Due to the craziness of the holidays, we pushed our Volunteer Holiday Party back a few weeks and had a belated one this month. Although a few volunteers scattered before this picture, we had a great time getting to know each other, hearing each others’ passion for service, and reviewing the Volunteer Manual. This is the second of many ways to highlight the appreciation we have for all of our volunteers!

Meet Alyssa Hammer, Community Engagement Specialist

  • I am the Community Engagement Specialist and have been working at CAPUP for the last year. My day-to-day tasks include managing volunteers, handling CAPUP’s marketing needs, and anything else that is needed.
  • I was born and raised in Glen Allen (right outside of Richmond) and went to college in Lynchburg at Liberty University. In my free time, I love being outside (running trails, walking), grabbing coffee with friends, and petting golden retrievers. In May, I will be getting married to my best friend, and I can’t wait!
  • Volunteerism is essential to the success of our programs at CAPUP. It expands staff capacity, enables sustainability and consistency across services, and promotes a sense of “togetherness”. In addition, it can often bridge between the barriers that (unfortunately) exist at times between staff and neighbors. Volunteers are able to relate to the community in ways that staff don’t always have the freedom to do so (personal life details, etc). Volunteers also don’t have to say “no” to neighbors due to funding shortages but get to show up and serve! Our volunteers have shared that it feels so good to give back and to assist neighbors in moments of vulnerability.

We are currently looking for consistent volunteers to fill our daytime shifts. If you are retired, have a civic/community group you are part of, or know others who might be interested, please click the button below for ways to volunteer and/or donate funds!
